VOCABULARY

Gross (2013) discusses the power of words in Transforming our image, building our brandWord choice impacts how the community views the library and deems its worth.

EPL does an adequate job in the terminology they use on their website.

Here are a few instances where they follow Gross' (2013) suggested terms:

● Their Calendar lists “events".

● They denote patron privileges as “membership benefits”.

● EPL uses the word “borrowing” for circulation.

● They call “Customer Service” instead of “Circulation desk”.

● EPL refers to borrowers as “members”.

While EPL does a good job using this alternate vocabulary, there are still some places on the catalog, marketing materials and event calendar that could be improved.  These examples include:

●Their catalog uses the phrase “Online Resources” instead of specialized research tools.

● The catalog utilizes the term “early literacy” instead of childhood education.

● Their Community-Led booklet refers to “outreach” instead of marketing/community education.

● Their Community-Led booklet calls people who use their services “users” instead of customers.

● Their event calendar shows “programs” instead of class or events.

● Their event calendar lists “storytime” instead of children’s classes.
