Gross (2013) defines self-directed education as any and all materials customers can find on their own to advance their individual learning goals. It also includes organizing the layout of the physical library space to facilitate the ease of finding materials as well as the ease of accessing digital content.

EPL provides a plethora of self-directed materials in a variety of formats.
They use standard signage across all branches to make it easy for customers to find the physical items they need.
EPL's website is organized to make it easy for customers to find many categories of digital materials to satisfy their information needs. Digital Content is an easily recognizable main menu selection visible on every page. Simply clicking on the homepage takes visitors to a complete list of digital content in all forms. Databases, ebooks, streaming services are all easily accessible.
